What is cold process soap?
It is a traditional handmade soap created by combining oils and sodium hydroxide lye, which causes a chemical reaction called saponification. During the saponification process, all of the lye reacts with the oils to create soap. A properly formulated soap has no lye in the final product. We customize every batch of soap by selecting the oils, liquids, natural additives (e.g., charcoal, oatmeal, honey), scent and color to create a truly unique bar of soap.
What are the benefits of cold process soap?
The cold process method preserves the benefits of the selected oils and other natural ingredients. The beneficial components of these ingredients are often lost in other methods of soapmaking. In addition, while the lye turns the oils into soap, it also produces glycerin, a valuable natural byproduct of saponification. Glycerin is a humectant, which attracts moisture to the skin and creates a protective barrier preventing your skin from losing moisture. Glycerin is removed from commercial soap, which are actually detergents rather than true soap. The glycerin is removed so that it can be sold and used in cosmetics, lotions, and other moisturizers. This makes the commercial “soap” harsh and can leave your skin dry, itchy, and irritated.
How long does it take to make a loaf of soap?
The process of making a loaf of soap can take 30 minutes to more than an hour, depending on the complexity of the formulation. However, cold process soaps require a minimum of 4-6 weeks to cure after they are poured. During the cure period, the soaps are left to rest in a cool, dry environment. Fully curing the soap allows it to lose extra moisture, harden and become a more gentle, nourishing, and cleansing bar of soap.
Why does my Ananas soap not last as long as the soap I buy at the store?
Ananas soap contains all-natural oils and glycerin that moisturize and nourish the skin so much that most people do not need to use any lotion or other moisturizer after bathing. Ananas soap also contains liquids such as goat’s milk, aloe vera juice, and beer, chosen for their specific and unique benefits. The all-natural oils, glycerine, and liquids make the soap wonderful for your skin, but also make them a little softer. The ingredients in all-natural soap are so different and far superior to those in commercial detergent, that it makes sense that they have different physical properties.
How do I prolong the life of my soap?
- The best way to enjoy your Ananas soap longer is to keep it away from the direct water stream while showering.
- After using the soap, let it rest on its side, away from direct water so it can dry before your next use.
- We recommend using a soap lift or self-draining soap tray, which will help keep the soap dry between uses and extend it’s life.
- Keep several bars and rotate them, using a different one each time you bathe depending on your mood.
- Buy several bars and let them continue to cure, harden, and age. Like a fine wine, handmade soaps get even better with age. Our favorite soaps are our soaps we’ve personally held onto for 2+ years.
Are your soaps tear-free?
No, they are not. Our soaps are authentic soaps with no additives to change their natural properties. They are alkaline with a pH of approximately 8.5. It will sting if you get the soap in your eyes. Please be mindful of this if you let your children use Ananas soap.
